The single-player assumption is so deeply baked into how we think about coding tools that it's nearly invisible. One developer opens a project, the assistant attaches to their window, the agent runs against their git checkout, the suggestions land in their buffer, and any sharing happens later through commits, pull requests, or screenshots in Slack. Every popular AI editor — Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf — operates on that assumption.

It works fine for a developer working alone on a feature branch. It breaks down the moment the unit of work involves two or more people. Live pairing degrades to one person driving while the other watches over Zoom. Incident response means three engineers in three terminals reconstructing the same file from memory. Code review with an AI assistant happens after the fact, in a PR, with the author and the reviewer never actually looking at the same buffer with the same agent at the same time.

The hidden cost is that agent reasoning — the tool calls, the failed hypotheses, the chain that led to a fix — stays trapped in one developer's local session. The next person who hits the same problem starts from zero. The next agent run against the same project re-discovers the same context. None of it compounds.

The single-player tax
Every async hand-off between two developers (or between a developer and an agent in another window) is a context-rebuilding step. On team workloads we measured that tax at roughly a third of total cycle time — and it isn't the tax that's visible in metrics, because it shows up as "reading the code" rather than as coordination overhead.

The detail that matters is the buffer. In Zed, every collaborator — human or agent — operates against the same in-memory document with conflict-free replicated state. There is no "your copy and my copy." When an agent edits, the edit is visible immediately in every collaborator's view. When a human edits on top of an agent's pending change, the resolution is handled at the CRDT layer rather than at the git layer.

That sounds like an implementation detail. It is not. The reason multi-agent workflows are usable in Zed and unusable nearly everywhere else is precisely this layer. Channels and threads are the second half of the collaborative story. A channel is a persistent shared space — usually scoped to a team, a project, or a sub-system. Within a channel, threads carry both human chat and agent reasoning traces. The result is a place where the team's agent state actually accumulates.

Threads bundle the human conversation with the agent's session state: which model is attached, what tools it has, the reasoning trace so far. Closing and re-opening a thread later restores the full context — the next person to pick up the work doesn't start from a blank prompt.

04PerformanceRust + GPUI — the editor that doesn't lag.

None of the collaborative story would matter if the editor itself lagged under load. Zed's answer is two architectural choices that go deeper than most teams realize. The editor is written in Rust — no Electron, no JavaScript event loop, no browser engine mediating keystrokes. Rendering goes through GPUI, a custom GPU UI framework that draws the entire interface using the host machine's graphics hardware rather than a layout engine.

The practical result is latency you can feel. Keystrokes register in single-digit milliseconds even with several active collaborators, a streaming agent, and large open files. Splits, buffer switches, and scroll behave the same under load as they do on an empty project — which is not something most Electron-based editors can honestly claim.

The point of the chart above is not the absolute numbers — those depend heavily on the hardware. The point is the shapeof the curve. In our evaluations Zed degraded gracefully under exactly the workloads that should be punishing: many collaborators, streaming agents, large diffs. Electron-based editors typically have a steeper falloff on the same scenarios. Performance isn't a luxury here; it's a precondition for the multiplayer story being usable in the first place.

A prose-heavy markdown buffer benefits from Claude's writing style; a long-context multi-file refactor wants Gemini 3.1 Pro's window; a tight, autonomous test-suite agent runs better on GPT-5.5; a sovereignty-bound config file may need to stay on a local Ollama model. Local models are reserved for two narrow cases — sovereignty constraints and offline work on planes.

Cursor 3 remains the strongest single-player experience — tab completion, plan mode, and the agent panel are still best-in-class for one developer driving one project. Claude Code is the strongest autonomous loop — headless agents running for hours, writing PRs, fixing tests, no human in the loop. Zed isn't trying to be either. Its bet is that the third category — collaborative AI coding — is large enough on its own to justify a separate editor.

A useful rule of thumb after several weeks of side-by-side use: for work where the unit is a single developer plus their agent, stay in Cursor or Claude Code.
