Any script, dashboard or AI agent that talks to Google Ads through version 22 of its API has a deadline. Google’s timetable puts the v22 sunset in October 2026, marked tentative, which Google says means it could happen on any day that month. After it, requests to v22 fail.
That makes this the week to check. Google released v25.2 on September 23, so Google’s timetable now lists ten released versions, and the right one to move to depends on how often you want to repeat the job. Below is every live version with its dates, the lifecycle rules Google states, and how to see which versions your code actually calls.
- 01v22 is due to sunset in October 2026.Google marks the month as tentative: the sunset can land on any day in it, and the date can move.
- 02v25.2 shipped on September 23 with no breaking changes.Google's release notes say minor versions like v25.2 don't contain breaking changes.
- 03You can skip versions.Google says you can upgrade from version N straight to N+2, so v22 can go directly to v25.
- 04A late minor version has a shorter life.v25.2 sunsets in August 2027 with v25, roughly 11 months after release against about 13 for v25.
01 — The deadlinev22 is the next version to go
v22, released October 15, 2025
Marked tentative. The sunset can happen on any day in the month, and Google says the date can change.
Four major lines, six minor versions listed
Google aims to keep at most five major versions available at any one time.
Projected, with a November 2027 sunset
v26.1 in November is optional because it falls in the holiday season.
Google’s definitions are blunt. A deprecated version is any version that is not the latest, and it keeps working. A sunset version stops: the API returns an error, new client library releases drop it, and Google no longer supports it. Every released version below except v25.2 is already deprecated.
02 — The tableEvery live version, with its sunset
Sunset dates are given to the month. Google publishes projected release months for the next two versions; both are included and labelled. Google’s release notes also record v22.1 (February 25, 2026), v22.2 and v23.3 (both June 24, 2026), which the timetable does not list.
| Version | Released | Sunset | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| v22 | Oct 15, 2025 | Oct 2026 (tentative) | Next to go. Requests fail on or after the sunset date. |
| v23 | Jan 28, 2026 | Feb 2027 | Major release. |
| v23.1 | Feb 25, 2026 | Feb 2027 | Shares the v23 sunset month. |
| v23.2 | Mar 25, 2026 | Feb 2027 | Shares the v23 sunset month. |
| v24 | Apr 22, 2026 | May 2027 | Major release. |
| v24.1 | May 13, 2026 | May 2027 | Shares the v24 sunset month. |
| v24.2 | Jun 24, 2026 | Jun 2027 | One month later than v24 and v24.1. |
| v25 | Jul 22, 2026 | Aug 2027 | Major release with breaking changes. |
| v25.1 | Aug 19, 2026 | Aug 2027 | Shares the v25 sunset month. |
| v25.2 | Sep 23, 2026 | Aug 2027 | Latest. No breaking changes. |
| v26 | Oct 2026 (projected) | Nov 2027 | Next major release. |
| v26.1 | Nov 2026 (projected) | Nov 2027 | Optional, because it overlaps the holiday season. |
The dates come from Google’s deprecation and sunset timetable, which also lists the minimum client library for each major version. For Java, that is library 41.0.0 for v22 up to 44.0.0 for v25. Minor versions can need a newer library, which the changelog for each language states.
03 — The rulesThe lifecycle rules Google states
- About a year per major version. Google gives major versions a lifespan of around 12 months and minor versions about 10, and aims to sunset a version a year after release.
- A new major version every three to four months. The table bears it out: v22, v23, v24 and v25 arrived in October, January, April and July.
- At most two upgrades a year. Google says that is the most you should need, and that upgrades do not have to be sequential.
One consequence is easy to miss. Minor versions mostly share the sunset month of their major line, so a minor released late in a cycle gets less time. v25.2 arrived on September 23 and sunsets in August 2027 with v25, about 11 months later. v25 itself gets about 13. The one exception in the current table is v24.2, which sunsets a month after v24.
Google’s timetable explains how to see which versions a project uses. In the Google Cloud Console, open APIs and Services, choose Google Ads API, and look at the Methods table on the Metrics tab. Each method name includes the version, for example google.ads.googleads.v25.services.GoogleAdsService.Mutate. Anything showing v22 needs moving.
04 — What’s newWhat v25.2 added
According to Google’s release notes, v25.2 is additive. The changes most likely to matter to automation work:
- Smart campaign to Performance Max drafts. A new method generates a paused Performance Max draft from an existing Smart campaign, with a validate-only mode that reports conversion issues before anything is created.
- Asset group URL options. Tracking templates, custom parameters and final URL suffixes can now be set on a Performance Max asset group.
- Bid recommendations. Two new recommendation types suggest raising a target CPA or lowering a target ROAS when bids are too low for Search campaigns to enter auctions.
- Benchmarks in percentile tiers, showing where an account stands among other advertisers, and clearer error reasons when Business Profile location sync fails.
Hotel and travel advertisers also get new booking-window and pricing segments. The previous release, covered in our note on v25.1’s AI Max migration fields, shares v25.2’s August 2027 sunset.
05 — DecisionWhich version to move to
The last row matters now. Google’s Customer Match guide steers new integrations to Data Manager, and Customer Match now accepts IP addresses, covered in our post on Customer Match’s new IP and timestamp columns. For teams connecting AI assistants to Google Ads, our Google Ads MCP server guide covers the setup, and the same version rules apply underneath it.
06 — ConclusionTwo upgrades a year is the real cost of the Google Ads API
Check the Methods table in Google Cloud Console for v22 calls, and schedule the move to v25.2 before October starts
A tentative sunset month means the safe deadline is its first day. Put the next two sunsets in the calendar at the same time: February 2027 for the v23 line and May 2027 for v24. The same discipline applies to AI model APIs, which our model deprecation playbook covers. If you would rather hand the upgrade to someone, our paid media team maintains Google Ads API integrations and reporting pipelines.
