Key Takeaways

Share depends on what you measure: iOS accounts for 32.5% of mobile page views worldwide (StatCounter, August 2026), 20% of Q2 2026 phone sales (Counterpoint) and nearly one in four phones in use (Counterpoint, 2025). Quote the measure with the number.
iOS leads in rich markets, Android almost everywhere else: iOS takes 60% or more of mobile page views in Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States, and about 7% in India.
iPhones update fast; Android stays fragmented: 79% of all iPhones ran iOS 26 in June 2026. On Android, the three newest versions covered 43.9% of active devices in Google's latest data.
Apple leads the premium tier and led 2025 shipments: Apple was the largest vendor in 2025 in IDC's, Omdia's and Counterpoint's counts, and took 65% of premium phone sales in H1 2026.

How much of the mobile market does iOS have? About a third of mobile web traffic, a fifth of new phones sold and nearly a quarter of the phones in use, depending on how you measure. Many widely shared mobile OS statistics mix these measures, or give no source at all.

This page collects current mobile OS figures by region, country, OS version, shipments and app spending. Every row names its source and date and says what kind of number it is. Figures were last checked on September 22, 2026. For how these numbers shape an app roadmap, see our web and app development work.

Global iOS vs Android Share

"Market share" is measured in three different ways, and they give different answers. StatCounter measures the share of web page views from each operating system across more than a million websites. Research firms such as Counterpoint, IDC and Omdia estimate the share of phones sold or shipped in a period. Apple and Google report their own active-device counts, and Counterpoint estimates the installed base of phones in use. iOS takes about a third of mobile page views, roughly a fifth of new phones sold (17% to 24% a quarter since 2025), and nearly one in four phones in use.

On StatCounter's measure, iOS has gained about seven points in a year, from 25.7% of mobile page views in August 2025 to 32.5% in August 2026. StatCounter's panel has shifted sharply over the same year: mobile's share of all web page views fell from 59.2% to 49.3%, and iOS share jumped by 20 points or more in markets such as Australia and Saudi Arabia while it fell in Germany. Treat year-on-year changes in page-view share with caution.

Share by Continent

iOS leads in North America and Oceania. Android leads everywhere else, by the widest margin in Africa, Asia and South America. StatCounter reports South America rather than Latin America, so figures quoted for "Latin America" come from somewhere else.

Share by Country

In several high-income markets iOS takes most mobile page views: Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States all sit above 60%. Other wealthy markets such as Germany (27.6%) and France (36.3%) remain Android-majority. India is at the other end, at about 7% iOS, up from 4.5% a year earlier.

iOS and iPadOS Version Adoption

Apple publishes version adoption from devices that transacted on the App Store. In June 2026, 79% of all iPhones ran iOS 26, released in September 2025. That is a little behind iOS 18 at the same point in its cycle (82%). StatCounter's page-view data gives a similar picture, with iOS 26 on about three-quarters of iOS traffic in August 2026.

Android Version Distribution

Android versions are spread far more widely. Android 16 leads StatCounter's page views at about a quarter of Android traffic, and seven versions each hold 4% or more. Google no longer publishes a version table on its developer dashboard; the latest official figures are the December 2025 distribution data used by Android Studio.

Smartphone Shipments and the Premium Tier

Apple was the largest smartphone vendor in 2025 in all three major research firms' counts, with Samsung a close second. Samsung led the first two quarters of 2026 in IDC's and Omdia's figures. The research firms' quarterly numbers are often revised, so each row names the firm and whether the figure is preliminary.

In premium phones, iOS dominates: Apple took 65% of sales above $600 wholesale in the first half of 2026, and premium phones reached a record 29% of all sales.

China and HarmonyOS

China is the one large market with a third mobile OS. Huawei's HarmonyOS reached 24% of China smartphone sales in Q2 2026, ahead of iOS at 18%. Huawei was China's largest vendor in 2025, while Apple led in the fourth quarter after the iPhone 17 launch.

App Store and Google Play Economics

Consumers spent about $167 billion in apps and games in 2025, according to Sensor Tower. Sensor Tower's public figures combine the App Store and Google Play, and no current public source splits annual spending by store. Apple and Google each publish their own ecosystem and safety figures, shown here as vendor-reported.

What It Means for App Teams

Choose the measure that matches the decision. For where your users are, use page-view or analytics data for your own markets: iOS is the majority in North America, Japan and Australia and a small minority in India and Africa. For who is buying new phones, use sales share, which shifts with the iPhone launch cycle each quarter.

Version support is easier to plan on iOS, where about 86% of recent iPhones ran iOS 26 about nine months after its release. On Android, supporting only the latest two or three versions would miss a large share of users: in Google's December 2025 data, Android 14 to 16 together covered 43.9% of active devices. Test on the older versions your own analytics show, rather than on a global average.

For revenue, Google Play grew faster than the App Store in Q2 2026 (Sensor Tower), and no current public source splits annual app spending by store. Treat any exact "iOS share of app revenue" figure with caution unless its source and year are named.

Widely Quoted Figures, Checked

Several mobile OS figures circulate without a source, or mix different measures. These are the ones we see most often, checked against the primary data.

Often quoted asWhat the source says
Android has about 71% of the market and iOS about 29%It depends on the measure. StatCounter shows iOS at 32.5% of mobile page views in August 2026; Counterpoint puts iOS at 20% of Q2 2026 phone sales; nearly one in four phones in use is an iPhone.
iOS earns about two-thirds of app store revenueNo current public source splits 2025 app spending by store. Sensor Tower's public $167 billion figure for 2025 combines both stores.
Samsung is the world's largest smartphone vendorNot for 2025: IDC, Omdia and Counterpoint all put Apple first for the year. Samsung led Q1 2026 (IDC, Omdia) and Q2 2026.
Over 84% of iPhones run iOS 18Out of date. iOS 26 followed in September 2025 and was on 79% of all iPhones at Apple's June 2026 reading; iOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026.
Android has more than 3 billion users (a new milestone)Google first reported 3 billion active Android devices in 2021 and has restated it since, most recently in 2025, without a newer count.

How to Use These Numbers

When you quote a mobile OS figure, carry the measure and the date with it. "iOS had 32.5% of mobile page views worldwide in August 2026 (StatCounter)" is checkable; "iOS has a third of the market" is not, because sales and installed-base figures give different answers.

For product decisions, start from your own analytics and the country figures for your markets, then use Apple's and Google's version data to set support windows.
