On September 30, 2026 Reddit posted two announcements, one for developers and one for moderators, that close the two free ways software has read Reddit without a contract. RSS feeds end on November 13. New public API access stops being granted after October 31, unregistered apps start losing access on January 12, 2027, and the public Data API closes altogether in March 2027. Moderator bots get a funded path to Reddit’s own Developer Platform. AI assistants, social listening tools and research scrapers that read Reddit through the public API get no stated replacement.
Editorial note: Prepared October 3 as an October 1, 2026 dispatch. Reddit’s two announcement posts refuse every automated fetch, so this article relies on Reddit’s Help Center and Developer Platform pages for the dates they state, and on TechCrunch’s same-day report for the wording of the posts themselves. Each row of the deadline table names which.
- 01The first cut is October 31After that date Reddit stops taking new requests for public API access. A tool without an app today cannot get one.
- 02RSS ends with no replacementReddit’s help page gives moderators a Devvit app for alerts. For feeds outside a community you moderate, Reddit says there is nothing.
- 03Registration is the only lifelineUnregistered apps lose access from January 12, 2027. Registration by November 30 also opens a $1,000 bounty for migration.
- 04AI tools need a contractAfter March 2027 the programmatic route to Reddit conversations is a commercial agreement, which is how AI labs already read it.
01 — The evidenceEvery dated deadline
Seven dates, in order. Four come from Reddit pages that can be read directly; three come from the announcement posts, which we could not fetch, as reported by TechCrunch on the day. The table says which is which.
| Date | What happens | Who it affects | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 31, 2026 | Last day Reddit accepts new requests for public API access | Anyone without an existing Data API app | Reddit’s r/redditdev post of September 30, as reported by TechCrunch and others; the post itself refuses automated fetches |
| Nov 13, 2026 | RSS feeds stop | Feed readers, monitoring tools and moderator alert workflows built on RSS | Reddit Help Center, mod alerts article (primary) |
| Nov 30, 2026 | Register an existing Data API app by this date to be eligible for the $1,000 porting bounty | Developers of existing apps and bots | Reddit Developer Platform app-registration page (primary) |
| Dec 31, 2026 | Migration to the Developer Platform must be complete to receive the bounty; the migration programme’s term ends | Apps selected for the migration programme | Reddit Help Center, 2026 Migration Program Terms (primary) |
| Jan 12, 2027 | Reddit begins removing API access for apps and users that have not registered or engaged with the Developer Platform team | Every unregistered Data API app | Reddit Developer Platform app-registration page (primary) |
| March 2027 | Remaining public API access ends | Everything still on the public Data API | Reddit Developer Platform app-registration page (primary) |
| Coming months | Old Reddit limited to logged-in users active there in the last six months; moderators exempt | Scrapers and readers of the old.reddit.com interface | Reddit’s r/modnews post of September 30, as reported by TechCrunch |
The two primary pages are worth bookmarking. Reddit’s app-registration page carries the January 12 and March 2027 dates and the bounty condition in its first lines. The Help Center’s mod alerts article states the November 13 RSS date and walks through the replacement for moderators.
02 — The reason givenWhat Reddit says is driving it
Reddit’s stated reason is abuse. As TechCrunch quoted the moderator announcement, RSS has become a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse”, and the same justification was given for restricting Old Reddit. The announcement also acknowledged, in TechCrunch’s quotation, that RSS “has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time”.
TechCrunch’s report adds a second reason Reddit did not state: the company’s licensing of its content to AI companies. It cites Reddit’s second-quarter 2026 results, in which revenue other than advertising grew 24% year on year to $43 million. Free programmatic access and paid data licences are the same asset sold twice, and the free version is the one being withdrawn.
The direction is not new. We covered the earlier Reddit search and data deals and the study of how often AI assistants cite Reddit. What is new is a date on which the free door closes.
03 — Practical implicationsWhat each kind of tool must do
The announcements treat four kinds of software differently, and the right action depends on which one you run.
The fourth row is the one most readers of this site run. A listening agent of the kind we described in building a social listening agent typically polls subreddit JSON or RSS. Both routes close within six months of each other. The agent needs a licensed source or a narrower brief before November.
04 — The fundThe migration fund and who it is for
Reddit’s app-registration page describes a $1,000,000 Developer Platform App Migration Program paying a $1,000 porting bounty to selected apps that register by November 30. The programme terms, on Reddit’s Help Center, narrow who qualifies: the app must have existed before March 25, 2026, must provide essential utility or moderation for communities with at least 1,000 weekly active users or important tooling for end users, must pass app review, and must complete migration by December 31, 2026. The terms run from March 31 to December 31, 2026 and say a limited number of awards will be made, at Reddit’s discretion.
The bounty is for community tools, not for commercial products. An app that reads Reddit to feed a dashboard, a brand monitor or an AI assistant does not meet the “essential utility or moderation functionality” test, and migrating it to the Developer Platform would not restore the data access it is losing. The fund is for the bots that keep subreddits running.
05 — ContextWhat changes for marketers and researchers
Reddit’s content stays public to people and to the search engines and AI companies that pay for it. What changes is who can read it by machine without a contract. For a marketing team, the Reddit data in a listening dashboard will come, after March, only from vendors that hold an agreement, and the vendor’s terms will decide what you can keep. For researchers, TechCrunch’s report notes the shutdown reaches tools used for research, and the announcements as reported name no academic path.
Reddit’s own numbers explain the asset being protected; our Reddit statistics reference collects them. The strategic read is in what Google’s Reddit deal does and does not mean for visibility. And for teams whose monitoring or outreach depends on Reddit, our social media work is where the licensed-source question gets settled before the November date.
Register anything that reads Reddit, this month
Registration costs nothing and is the only action that preserves access past January 12. Do it before October 31 for anything without an app, then decide by November whether each tool gets a licence, a replacement or a retirement.
