Key Takeaways
What does SEO cost in 2026? It depends on who you hire and where they are based, and the spread is wide. Ahrefs’ and SE Ranking’s surveys put most monthly retainers at $2,000 or less, the provider surveys put most hourly rates at $150 or less, and a minority of providers, concentrated in the US, UK and Australia and among clients in industries such as SaaS and finance, charge $5,000 a month or more.
This page collects SEO pricing figures whose publishers say who they asked: provider surveys from Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Backlinko and GoodFirms, review data from Clutch, marketplace rates from Upwork, agency research from Promethean Research, Forrester and AgencyAnalytics, US wage and price statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO. Every row names its source and period. Figures were last checked on October 21, 2026. For prices across other channels, see our digital marketing pricing guide for 2026.
How to read this page: “Survey (providers’ own prices)” rows come from SEO agencies, consultants and freelancers reporting what they charge. They show asking prices, not what a typical buyer pays, and each survey reaches a different mix of respondents: SE Ranking’s 260 agencies (170 surveyed and 90 from its agency catalogue) are mostly small, Ahrefs’ and Backlinko’s include freelancers, and neither Ahrefs nor Backlinko says when it ran its survey (Ahrefs first published its results in 2023 and last updated them in August 2024). Some Ahrefs averages are calculated from the top of each price band, so they lean high. “Directory data” is Clutch’s summary of client reviews, and Clutch does not say how many reviews or what period it covers; “Marketplace data” is Upwork’s median rates on its own platform; a “Published range” is a price range given without a sample. “Survey (agency leaders)” covers digital or marketing agencies in general, not only SEO. “Official statistics” are US government data, “Estimate” is a market-report seller’s model, “Measured” is crawl data, and “Platform guidance” and “Platform rule” come from Google’s own documentation.
SEO Pricing in 2026: What the Surveys Show
No public dataset records what businesses actually pay for SEO. The best evidence comes from surveys in which providers report their own prices, and they differ because each reaches a different mix of respondents. Ahrefs’ survey of 439 agencies, consultants and freelancers gives an average of $2,917 a month. SE Ranking’s 2024 data on 260 agencies (170 surveyed and 90 from its agency catalogue), most of them small, found 64% of agencies charging retainers under $1,000. GoodFirms’ 2026 survey of 300+ agencies put 48.0% in a $1,500–$5,000 band.
Clutch’s average of $3,199.19 a month comes from client reviews of agencies listed in its directory, and it does not say how many reviews it covers. Market-size estimates measure something else again: Market Glass values the US SEO market at $24.5 billion for 2024, but its figure includes software as well as services, and its method is not public.

Monthly Retainer Pricing
Retainers are the most common way to buy SEO, and most of them are small. In Ahrefs’ survey the single most common band was $501–$1,000 a month (20.4% of providers), and 68.8% charged $2,000 or less. SE Ranking found 30% of agencies charging under $500 a month and only 2% above $5,000.
Where the provider is based moves the price as much as any package name. In Backlinko’s survey, only 7% of providers in the US, UK and Australia charged under $500 a month, against 42% in India and Latin America, and 19% of US, UK and Australian providers charged more than $5,000. Two retainer quotes are comparable only if they cover the same scope, so ask for the deliverables and hours behind each number. For how we scope ongoing work, see our SEO services.

Retainer, Project or Hourly: How SEO Is Billed
Many providers offer more than one model. In Ahrefs’ survey, 78.2% charged a monthly retainer, 48.9% charged per project and 34.8% by the hour. Asked for their main model, 60.6% of GoodFirms’ 2026 respondents named the retainer and 13.4% a hybrid: a monthly base plus milestone fees for large pieces of work such as a site migration.
Packages dominate small-agency selling: 85% of SE Ranking’s respondents bundle SEO into packages. A package fixes the deliverables, not the outcome, so check that its contents match the problems your site actually has. Across digital agencies of every kind, Promethean Research found that 8% or fewer rely on a single pricing model.

Project-Based SEO Pricing
One-off projects such as audits, migrations and content plans are priced per job, and the surveys put most fees in the low thousands. $2,501–$5,000 was the most common per-project fee in Ahrefs’ survey (21.2% of providers), and 66% of SE Ranking’s agencies charged $500–$2,000 on average. Large projects sit at the top of the market: some US and Canada providers in Ahrefs’ survey charged $50,001–$75,000.
Those large jobs pull averages up. Clutch’s average SEO project, from client reviews, is $37,158.66, yet Clutch says the usual project costs less than $10,000. For a full technical audit billed outside a retainer, GoodFirms lists $1,500–$5,000 as a typical fee; that is a published range, not a measured average.

Hourly Rate Benchmarks
Hourly rates are the easiest way to compare quotes. Ahrefs puts the average at $111 an hour, with 90% of providers at $150 or less and 4.1% above $200. SE Ranking found 45% of agencies charging $50–$100 an hour, and Clutch says most SEO agencies in its directory charge $100–$149.
Freelance marketplaces sit far lower: Upwork gives $15–$35 as the range of median hourly rates for both SEO experts and SEO content writers. Full-service digital agencies sit higher: 29% of agencies in Promethean Research’s 2026 survey charged $175–$199 an hour across all their services. To test a retainer quote, divide the monthly fee by the hours the provider commits to and compare the result with these ranges for the seniority on offer.

Pricing by Provider Type, Experience and Region
Agencies charge more than freelancers, and consultants charge the most per month and per hour. Ahrefs’ averages are $3,209 a month for agencies, $3,250 for consultancies and $1,348.63 for freelancers; Backlinko puts the agency premium over freelancers at about 30%. In SE Ranking’s survey, over 70% of agencies with 25 or more employees charged over $1,000 a month, over $100 an hour and over $2,000 a project. Its sample is mostly small agencies (78% had fewer than 10 people), which pulls its figures down.
Experience moves price as well. Ahrefs’ providers in business two years or less averaged $1,540.52 a month and $73.05 an hour; those in business five to ten years averaged $3,648.28 a month. Region matters as well: 40% of US and Canada agencies in SE Ranking’s survey charged over $125 an hour against 6% in Europe, and Backlinko found US-based services cost 3–5x more than those from emerging markets. None of the sources checked publishes SEO prices by US city or a median price by country.

Local SEO Pricing
Local SEO, for businesses serving one city or region, costs less than SEO for wider markets. Providers serving local markets averaged $1,557.08 a month in Ahrefs’ survey, against $3,473.74 for those serving worldwide markets; agencies typically charge $1,819 a month for local SEO and freelancers around $1,150. GoodFirms gives $500–$1,500 a month as a workable budget for a local business in a defined area.
Part of the work costs nothing. A Google Business Profile is free, and Google says a small local business can probably do much of its SEO itself, starting with the SEO Starter Guide. For how often searches now end without a click to any website, see our zero-click search statistics.

Enterprise and Competitive-Industry Pricing
Few providers sell SEO above $5,000 a month: 5.5% of GoodFirms’ respondents and 2% of SE Ranking’s. The share varies with the client’s industry. In GoodFirms’ 2026 survey, 24.3% of agencies serving SaaS and technology clients and 23.6% of those serving finance and fintech charged $5,000 or more a month, against 9.0% for legal services and 9.1% for education. GoodFirms does not explain how these industry shares fit with its overall 5.5%.
At the very top, some US and Canada providers in Ahrefs’ survey charged $25,001–$50,000 a month, and 18% of US projects in Backlinko’s survey cost $10,000 or more. Clutch’s statement that agencies typically charge $2,000–$20,000 a month is a range without a sample. For a large budget, the useful yardstick is the cost of building the same capability in-house, covered below, rather than any published band.

How AI Is Changing SEO Pricing
AI is now standard inside agencies. Nine in 10 US marketing agencies use generative AI, according to Forrester’s 2026 report with the 4As, and 42% of agencies in AgencyAnalytics’ 2025 survey said they had reclaimed 5–10 billable hours a week. Forrester also found that 61% of agencies still classify AI as a ‘cost of business’ with limited direct monetization, and that staff productivity is their main objective for generative AI (81%). The price data below shows no fall in SEO prices so far.
Instead, AI has added a line item. In GoodFirms’ 2026 survey, 52.8% of SEO agencies had introduced AI search optimization as a formal service, often sold as an add-on at $900 or more a month; SE Ranking’s 2024 respondents put the average at $937. Before paying for it, read Google’s guidance: for its generative AI features, Google says site owners can ignore ‘AEO/GEO hacks’ such as chunking content or llms.txt files, and that no special schema.org markup is required.

Are SEO Prices Rising or Falling?
The survey evidence points to rising prices. In SE Ranking’s 2024 survey, 32% of agencies had recently raised prices and 38% planned to in 2025, most often citing inflation (28%). In GoodFirms’ 2026 survey, 54.3% raised prices during 2025–2026, and adding AI search services was the most common reason (37%).
The pace is modest. Promethean Research found 20% of digital agencies raising rates in 2026, down from 28% in 2025, and the US producer price index for advertising agencies rose 1.2% between September 2025 and September 2026. None of the sources checked for this page measures a fall in SEO prices.

In-House SEO: What the Wage Data Says
The alternative to an agency is a hire. O*NET files search marketing strategists, including SEO consultants, under market research analysts and marketing specialists, whose median US wage was $78,760 in May 2025, or $37.87 an hour. Senior people cost more: the highest-paid tenth of market research analysts earned over $155,480, and the median for marketing managers was $166,790.
Salary is not the full cost. For full-time private-sector workers, wages were 68.5% of employer compensation costs in June 2026, so benefits add about 46 cents to every dollar of wages. On that basis a $78,760 salary implies roughly $115,000 a year in employment cost, before software, training and management time. An in-house SEO also needs developer and writing support; the median wages were $92,650 for web developers and $76,910 for writers and authors.

Red Flags: What Google Says to Avoid
Price alone does not separate a good provider from a bad one, but Google’s own documentation lists the claims to walk away from. No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Appearing in organic results costs nothing, and advertising with Google does not affect them. A provider that promises a guaranteed position, or claims a ‘special relationship’ with Google, is one Google tells you to beware of.
Some SEO offers rely on tactics that Google’s spam policies treat as violations, such as buying links or publishing large volumes of pages to manipulate rankings, and sites that violate those policies may rank lower or drop out of results. For what works instead, see our guide to link building after the March 2026 update. Before signing, ask for examples of past work and references, agree a detailed scope document that lists deliverables, timelines and reporting, and give an auditor read access to Search Console, not write access.

How Long SEO Takes to Pay Back
Google gives no standard timeline for SEO results. It says individual changes can take effect within hours or take several months, and it recommends asking any provider what results it expects, in what timeframe, and how it measures success. Clutch’s client reviews put a typical SEO engagement at 12 months.
Ranking data shows why new content needs patience. Of 1 million random URLs that Ahrefs’ crawler saw in September 2023, which it reports as newly published pages, 1.74% reached Google’s top 10 within a year; in a sample limited to non-empty English pages, 6.11% did. Most pages in the top 10 (72.9%) are more than three years old.
To judge payback, compare the total fee with the value of the extra organic conversions the work can plausibly bring: (gross profit from additional organic conversions − SEO cost) ÷ SEO cost. At Ahrefs’ average agency retainer of $3,209 a month, a year of SEO costs $38,508, so the work pays back once the gross profit from additional organic sales over the period you measure exceeds that.

SEO Pricing Figures Often Quoted, Checked
Several SEO pricing figures circulate without a source. Each one below is checked against the sources listed on this page.
| Often quoted as | What the source says |
|---|---|
| The median SEO retainer is $3,500 a month | None of the surveys checked publishes a $3,500 median. Ahrefs’ all-provider average is $2,917 a month; SE Ranking found 64% of agencies under $1,000; GoodFirms found 43.3% under $1,500 and 5.5% above $5,000. |
| The average SEO specialist charges $150 an hour | Ahrefs gives $111 as the average, with 90% of providers at $150 or less. Backlinko’s survey puts the average at $50–$100, and Clutch says most agencies in its directory charge $100–$149. |
| AI tools have cut SEO prices by 20–30% | None of the sources checked measures a price cut. In GoodFirms’ 2026 survey, 54.3% of agencies raised prices in 2025–2026, and the US producer price index for advertising agencies rose 1.2% in the year to September 2026. |
| The US SEO services market is worth $82 billion | Market Glass, a market-report seller, values the global SEO market at $89.1 billion and the US market at $24.5 billion, both for 2024, and its figures include software as well as services. |
| Small businesses pay $2,500–$5,000 a month for SEO | Providers serving local markets averaged $1,557.08 a month in Ahrefs’ survey, and GoodFirms gives $500–$1,500 as a workable local budget. In SE Ranking’s survey, 13% of agencies charged $2,000–$5,000 a month. |
| SEO pays back in 6–12 months | Google gives no standard timeline; it says changes can take from a few hours to several months to show. Clutch’s client reviews put a typical SEO engagement at 12 months, which is a project length, not a payback period. |
| 73% of agencies now include AI in their standard SEO packages | Forrester reports that nine in 10 US marketing agencies use generative AI, and GoodFirms found that 52.8% of SEO agencies had introduced AI search optimization as a formal service. Neither gives 73%. |
How to Budget for SEO in 2026
Start from scope, not from a price band. Decide what the work has to fix (technical problems, content, local visibility or links), get two or three proposals that list deliverables and hours, and convert each into an effective hourly rate. The surveys give the reference points: most providers charge $150 an hour or less, most retainers in Ahrefs’ and SE Ranking’s surveys are $2,000 a month or less, and fees above $5,000 a month are charged by a small minority, concentrated in the US, UK and Australia and in competitive industries such as SaaS and finance.
Then judge the provider on what Google says matters: no guaranteed rankings, no paid links, a clear explanation of every change and a realistic timeline. A higher price is justified by senior expertise and a scope that fits your market, not by an AI add-on or a promise of quick results.
