Email marketing statistics need a date, a population and a definition. Reported opens, human clicks, attributed revenue and inbox placement describe different stages of a program. This guide preserves those distinctions while covering industry benchmarks, conversion, deliverability, automation, mobile design, segmentation and planning.

Sources were checked October 4, 2026. This is not an original survey or a live census. The benchmark source does not disclose a complete collection interval; that limitation remains visible rather than being filled with an invented research period. Practical recommendations below are guidance to evaluate locally, not measured universal effects.

Key Takeaways

Keep Historical Benchmarks Dated: The Mailchimp figures retained here are labelled December 2023, with platform and campaign-size limits. They are not measured 2026 industry averages.
Clicks Also Need Validation: Privacy-related opens and automated link checks can distort engagement reporting. Click-to-open rate inherits uncertainty from its open denominator.
Revenue Ratios Are Not Net ROI: The fictional example separates attributed revenue from contribution after campaign costs. Neither proves incremental sales without a suitable measurement design.
Authentication Is Not an Inbox Guarantee: Gmail requirements apply within a defined provider scope. They do not establish a universal authenticated-versus-unauthenticated placement gap.

Email Marketing Industry Overview

An email benchmark is useful only when its population resembles the program being evaluated. A platform’s tracked campaigns are not the entire email market. They also do not establish the number of people who use email, the volume of all messages sent worldwide or the return a new sender should expect. This guide does not retain unsupported market-size forecasts or a universal ranking of email against other channels.

Mailchimp’s public Email Marketing Benchmarks and Metrics Businesses Should Track page labels its dataset as last updated in December 2023. It describes tracked campaigns sent to at least 1,000 subscribers, with customers self-reporting their industry. The exact observation interval, campaign count and weighting are not disclosed on that page. Treat the figures below as historical platform observations, not a current market census.

Before comparing results, define the message type. A receipt, a newsletter, a renewal reminder and a cart-recovery message serve different purposes and reach people with different intentions. Pooling them can produce a headline average that changes simply because the mix changed. Keep transactional and promotional reporting distinguishable, and record whether the campaign was scheduled, triggered or part of a sequence.

For planning, begin with your own comparable history and use external evidence as context. Record the audience rules, collection period, delivery exclusions, tracking configuration and business objective. If any of these changed, explain the discontinuity. A lower rate after better filtering might be a measurement correction rather than a weaker campaign, while an improved rate might reflect a more selective recipient group.

Open Rate Benchmarks by Industry

In the December 2023 Mailchimp table, reported average opens are 35.63% for All Users, 31.35% for Business + Finance, 40.04% for Non-Profits, 35.64% for Education + Training and 29.81% for Ecommerce. These labels and dates matter: they replace the unsupported industry table previously presented here as 2026 data. The source explicitly cautions that Apple privacy changes affect interpretation.

Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection explanation, checked October 4, 2026, says Protect Mail Activity downloads remote content in the background regardless of engagement. A tracking-image request therefore need not mean that a person read the message. The documentation provides no universal correction factor for converting a reported open rate into a human-engagement rate.

Do not subtract a fixed number of percentage points from every campaign. The effect depends on the audience, client behavior and reporting method. Image blocking can also suppress tracked activity. Compare reports only after checking whether privacy-related opens are excluded, included or modelled, and whether the setting changed between periods. A label such as adjusted opens needs an explanation of the adjustment.

Use opens as a diagnostic signal with those limits attached. They can help identify a reporting discontinuity or an unusual campaign, but a subject-line decision should also consider meaningful downstream actions. A recipient may obtain useful information without clicking, while an apparent open may have happened without attention. The business purpose determines which additional evidence is needed; the open metric alone cannot resolve it.

Click-Through Rate Data by Industry

The same December 2023 Mailchimp table reports average click rates of 2.62% for All Users, 2.78% for Business + Finance, 3.27% for Non-Profits, 3.02% for Education + Training and 1.74% for Ecommerce. These are historical categories from the same source, not thresholds for a good campaign today. No AI-personalization uplift is established by those averages.

Mailchimp’s About Open and Click Rates documentation defines click rate around delivered emails registering a click. Its About Bot Activity and Bot Filtering guidance warns that automated interactions, including security scans, can inflate clicks and opens. Both documents were checked October 4, 2026; neither supplies a universal residual-error rate after filtering. Click tracking is useful, but it is not proof that every recorded interaction came from a person.

For local reporting, distinguish unique recipients who clicked from total click events. Specify whether the denominator is delivered messages or attempted sends and whether automated activity was filtered. A recipient clicking repeatedly should not silently become several engaged recipients. Keep the same settings across comparison periods or annotate the change rather than treating incompatible reports as a continuous trend.

Click-to-open rate divides a click measure by an open measure. It therefore inherits uncertainty in the open denominator and does not automatically solve privacy-related measurement problems. Check clicks alongside on-site behavior, qualified actions and conversions using consistent attribution rules. When those signals diverge, investigate the tracking and audience mix before deciding that the creative itself caused the difference.

Conversion Rate and Revenue Data

Conversion rate needs an explicit event and denominator. Purchases per delivered email, purchases per click and qualified enquiries per recipient are different rates. Revenue also needs a window, a refund policy and a method for assigning credit. A platform-attributed sale is not automatically an incremental sale caused by the email, especially when recipients also encounter paid media, organic search or other messages.

Hypothetical campaign — every input is fictional: Assume 10,000 delivered emails produce 250 unique recipients with a recorded click and 20 attributed orders during the chosen reporting window. The click rate is 2.5%; attributed orders per delivered email are 0.2%. Suppose attributed revenue is $2,000 and campaign costs, including labor, are $500. Revenue per delivered email is $0.20, and revenue divided by campaign cost is 4x.

Continuing the same fictional example: Suppose those orders contribute $800 after product and variable fulfillment costs, before campaign costs. Subtracting the $500 campaign cost leaves $300, or 60% contribution-based net return on campaign cost. This differs from the 4x revenue ratio. Neither is causal proof: without an incrementality design, some attributed orders might have occurred without the message.

For an investment decision, explain which costs were included. Platform subscriptions, production, review, data work and ongoing maintenance can sit in different budgets, but excluding them does not make them disappear. Avoid comparing a revenue-to-cost ratio for email with a profit-based return for another channel. Use the same economic basis, time horizon and attribution standard before making a channel-allocation claim.

Where practical, use a suitable holdout to estimate incremental effects, while monitoring whether groups remain comparable. Preserve uncertainty around small samples and long purchase cycles. If a holdout is not available, report attributed outcomes honestly and state the limitation. A repeatable measurement process is a stronger budget argument than borrowing a large return multiple from a differently defined survey.

Email Deliverability Statistics

Google’s sender-guidelines FAQ, checked October 4, 2026, defines bulk senders as those sending close to 5,000 messages or more to personal Gmail accounts in a 24-hour period, aggregated across the same primary domain. Once assigned, bulk-sender status is permanent. This scope is not all mailboxes or every message sent by an organization.

Its sender requirements specify SPF and DKIM plus DMARC for bulk senders; a DMARC policy of p=none can satisfy the minimum policy requirement. Marketing and subscribed messages also need one-click unsubscribe and a visible body unsubscribe link. These requirements do not establish a numerical inbox-placement guarantee or the previously claimed gap between authenticated and unauthenticated senders.

The FAQ recommends keeping the daily user-reported spam rate below 0.1% and preventing it from reaching 0.3% or higher. These are Google’s guidance for its reporting context, not an industry average complaint rate. The FAQ also describes enforcement as progressive and notes a ramp-up beginning November 2025. It does not support the original assertion that enforcement was fully completed in an earlier quarter.

Distinguish acceptance by a receiving server from inbox placement. A delivery status can help identify bounces and rejections, but it should not be relabelled as a direct observation of where the recipient found the message. For diagnosis, retain error responses, authentication results and provider-level reporting. Compare changes within a stable audience before attributing an improvement to a single technical adjustment.

Authentication is part of operating a trustworthy sending program, not a substitute for wanted mail. Monitor subscription expectations, complaint signals and unsubscribe handling alongside technical configuration. Avoid using an attractive logo or verification indicator as a promise that a message will reach the inbox. This article makes no measured claim about BIMI adoption, its open-rate effect or a universal authentication uplift.

AI Personalization and Automation Impact

The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal open-rate advantage for AI-written subject lines, an additive send-time uplift or a fixed revenue gain from AI email programs. Personalization, automation and generative drafting are separate interventions. A message can use a recipient field without generative AI, and a triggered workflow can operate without a model. Keep those distinctions in test labels and investment proposals.

Test the intended change against a credible alternative. If the question concerns subject-line generation, keep the offer, body, recipient eligibility and delivery conditions comparable. If the question concerns timing, avoid simultaneously changing the audience or promotion. A combined intervention can still be evaluated, but the result will not isolate the contribution of each feature unless the design supports that inference.

For personalization, document which data was used and why the message was appropriate for the recipient. Check missing fields, stale preferences and contradictory records before sending. Review generated claims and offers against approved source material. These are recommended operating controls, not a measured promise of higher clicks or a particular reduction in unsubscribes.

Automation should be assessed over the complete workflow. Record eligibility, exclusions, retries, duplicate prevention and the conditions that stop a sequence. Include the time spent checking output and resolving exceptions when evaluating efficiency. More generated variants can increase review effort without increasing useful learning, so expand the experiment only when your audience and evaluation capacity support it.

Interactive formats also need a fallback and a specific reason to exist. Evaluate whether the intended action works across the clients your recipients use and whether the reporting measures the same event in each version. This guide does not assert a universal AMP adoption share or a fixed engagement multiplier. Treat a new format as a testable product choice rather than an inevitable next stage.

Mobile Email Statistics

This article does not retain a universal mobile-open share, device ranking or average reading-time figure. Client-identification data reflects the population and observation method behind it; privacy-related fetching makes it especially important to distinguish detected requests from people using devices. A device-share estimate from a tracking system should not be presented as a census of all email reading.

Use a rendering matrix based on the clients relevant to your own subscribers and service requirements. Test narrow screens, enlarged text, dark backgrounds, image blocking and links that lead to mobile destinations. Inspect whether essential information remains readable when decorative assets fail to load. These are proposed quality checks, not claims that a particular layout guarantees a quantified performance lift.

The destination belongs in the same review. A readable email can still lead to an awkward form, a broken product page or an inaccessible document. Check the action from the message through completion, including any sign-in requirement or transition between apps. Avoid reporting success solely because a button was visible in a template preview.

When evaluating layout changes, keep content and audience comparable and assess the relevant downstream result. A simpler design might help comprehension, but its value should be demonstrated for the task. Do not infer that every reader prefers a single-column layout or that every mobile-first visit later converts on desktop. Cross-device behavior requires its own evidence and attribution limits.

B2B vs B2C Email Performance

A business-audience label and a consumer-audience label do not make two email programs comparable. Their offers, recipient relationships and purchase cycles may differ, as may what counts as a conversion. This repair withdraws the former side-by-side percentages, revenue-per-send ratios and optimal weekly frequencies because the common measurement basis was not established.

For a business program, an accepted enquiry or a qualified opportunity may be more useful than an immediate purchase. Document who accepts it and when. For a consumer program, completed orders and contribution after returns may be relevant. These are examples of possible objectives, not a rule that every business or consumer email must use the same outcome.

Keep the observation horizon appropriate to the decision. A campaign evaluated before its sales process has matured can appear weak even if it generates suitable opportunities. Conversely, crediting every later purchase to an old message can overstate its role. Report the chosen window and avoid comparing a short promotional window with a long relationship-building sequence as though only the audience type changed.

Frequency should be evaluated against recipient expectations and the purpose of the program. Monitor useful outcomes alongside fatigue signals and costs. Segment results by relevant relationship stage where the sample supports it, but avoid asserting a universally best weekday or send cadence. The aim is to learn what your audience tolerates and values, not to force its behavior into an unsupported benchmark table.

Email Design and Subject Line Data

A subject line makes a promise that the message must fulfill. Start by checking accuracy, relevance and consistency with the offer. Test how the sender name, preview text and subject work together in the intended clients. This guide does not prescribe an optimal word count, emoji count or preview-character range as a universal empirical finding.

Choose a primary outcome before inspecting test results. If meaningful clicks or qualified actions matter, do not select a variant solely because a noisy open metric is larger. Keep the assignment procedure and evaluation window explicit, and avoid repeatedly ending an experiment at the first favorable fluctuation. A useful result includes uncertainty and the conditions under which it was observed.

For design, make the hierarchy and intended action clear. Check descriptive link text, image alternatives, contrast and whether essential information is present as readable text. Different messages may need different structures: an account notice and a product catalogue should not be judged by the same visual template. These recommendations do not imply a guaranteed uplift from a single call to action or a particular message length.

Retain examples of failure as well as success. A layout may look good in a preview but conceal an unsubscribe link, truncate an important qualification or make an offer ambiguous. Record those defects and correct them before interpreting engagement data. The most clicked variant is not necessarily suitable to send if it achieves attention through an inaccurate or misleading promise.

List Growth and Segmentation Statistics

List growth should distinguish new subscribers from changes in the number of contacts eligible to receive a message. Imports, deduplication, address corrections, unsubscribes and suppression can all affect the count. A larger database is not automatically a larger reachable audience. Choose a clear definition and reconcile additions and removals before describing growth as evidence of stronger demand.

Segmentation is a selection rule, so comparisons require care. A recent purchaser group may behave differently from a broad list even without different creative. A measured advantage does not automatically establish that the act of segmenting caused it. To test a tailored message, compare suitable recipients under a design that separates selection from treatment as far as practical.

Do not build very narrow segments solely because a claimed industry multiplier makes them sound efficient. Smaller groups can produce unstable rates and expensive operational complexity. Start with distinctions that affect the relevance of the message, such as an expressed preference or a meaningful relationship stage, and keep the rules understandable to the people responsible for the campaign.

List hygiene should respect the limits of the signals used. Missing tracked opens alone does not prove that a subscriber never reads mail. Combine appropriate evidence, expectations and your own retention policy when deciding how to handle inactivity. Maintain suppression correctly and make re-engagement useful rather than treating every address as a target to be recovered at any cost.

For related operational discussion, see our email deliverability guide. Treat it as further process reading; the dated primary evidence and measurement limits in this article remain the basis for the figures retained here.

How to Use These Statistics

Use the historical benchmark to ask better questions, not to impose a universal target. Check whether your audience, campaign mix and tracking method match it. Use provider documentation for provider-specific requirements. Use your own consistently defined outcomes to decide whether a campaign, automation or design change deserves more investment.

For a budget case, reconcile attributed revenue with contribution and full program costs. For an engagement review, separate human intent from recorded events as far as your tools allow. For a technical review, keep delivery, authentication and inbox placement distinct. A small set of well-defined measurements is more useful than a large collection of figures whose scope cannot be reconstructed.
