Google Ads can show you the words customers use before they enquire or buy. Those words are useful starting points for TikTok Search Ads. The campaign results attached to them are not portable: matching, creative, audience context and conversion measurement still need a fresh test.

The practical choice is what to reuse, what to rewrite and what to verify. This guide follows TikTok’s August 2026 Search Ads setup documentation and February 2026 negative-keyword guidance, reviewed September 14. It provides a migration method rather than a forecast of cheaper conversions.

Key takeaways
  1. 01
Transfer the customer question.Retain the problem behind a successful query; reconsider the ad and landing-page answer.
  2. 02
Rebuild exclusion logic.Do not assume positive and negative keyword labels have identical semantics.
  3. 03
Judge accepted outcomes.Use qualified enquiries or completed orders, not a cross-platform comparison of clicks alone.

01Practical guidanceSeparate the keyword from the query

A keyword is a targeting instruction. A query is what somebody searched. Google’s matching documentation says positive exact match can include searches with the same meaning or intent. A successful exact-match keyword therefore does not prove that one literal phrase generated every conversion.

Start with the available search-term evidence and customer outcomes. Identify the problem being expressed, whether it concerns a brand, a comparison or an immediate purchase, and which destination answered it. Exclude irrelevant terms before proposing a new channel test.

A phrase such as “waterproof backpack” might represent product discovery, a durability question or shopping for a specific size. That illustrative phrase is not evidence of search demand on either platform. Write the intended question beside the phrase so the creative team has more than a spreadsheet of words.

02Practical guidanceWhat transfers and what needs rebuilding

TikTok’s Search Ads setup guide places keywords at ad-group level and limits these ad groups to search results. It supports multiple creative formats. This is a defined campaign context; do not treat every TikTok ad appearing near discovery content as the same product.

The following table is a proposed migration record. Retain the business insight in the second column and verify the implementation in the third. A missing platform option should stay marked unavailable, rather than being filled with an apparently similar control.

03Practical guidanceCheck negative keywords separately

TikTok’s negative-keyword guidance documents broad, phrase and exact exclusions. Broad blocks searches containing all excluded words in any order; phrase requires the specified sequence; exact requires the whole query. Singulars, plurals, misspellings and synonyms need separate consideration. Capitalisation is the stated exception.

For an illustrative exact negative [used backpack], a different plural or an additional word may remain eligible under the documented rule. That can matter when excluding second-hand enquiries, jobs or services you do not provide. Review the actual search terms available after launch rather than assuming a pasted negative list is complete.

Keep a short reason for each exclusion. An aggressive list can block useful discovery as well as waste. If an AI assistant suggests additions, require it to explain the business mismatch and match behaviour. The reviewer should be able to reject a suggestion without reconstructing the original campaign history.

04Practical guidanceTest whether the creative answers the search

Build a small set around a coherent customer problem. A product demonstration can answer a practical question; a comparison can explain a trade-off; a service ad can clarify eligibility and next steps. Keep the claim verifiable and make the destination deliver what the ad promises.

A literal copy of a Google text ad is not an adequate creative brief. Identify what the viewer needs to see, what must be said and which evidence supports the claim. When using video, compare the underlying outcome rather than treating differently defined views as equivalent. Our video-view reference documents that issue.

Before spending, verify availability in the relevant account and market, tracking consent, destination behaviour and the event selected for optimisation. Record the campaign configuration actually used. A feature described in a global help page does not establish every account’s eligibility.

05Practical guidanceDecide whether the new channel earns more budget

Use the same business definition of a qualified outcome across channels, while preserving each platform’s attribution settings. Reconcile leads to the sales process or orders to fulfilment. A lower reported cost is less persuasive if the new channel produces more duplicates, unsuitable enquiries or cancellations.

Set a review point and a decision rule before inspecting early results. A sparse test may tell you which messages deserve more investigation without proving a channel winner. Record uncertainty and the creative learning alongside the cost figures. The incrementality distinction remains relevant even when both platforms report conversions.

For paid-media planning, the useful outcome is a justified next step: expand a working problem-and-message combination, repair a broken conversion path or stop a poor fit. None requires declaring that TikTok has replaced Google Search.

For the wider discovery context, see search everywhere optimisation. Use it to frame customer journeys, while retaining separate evidence for each campaign.

Reuse customer language and the reasons certain enquiries are valuable. Rebuild matching, creative and measurement for the actual TikTok campaign. Increase investment only when its own evidence supports the business outcome you need.
