Of the 29 plan rows collected here across nine AI chat apps, ten use your conversations for model training by default, twelve do not, two make you choose at signup, and five do not say. The ten that train are all consumer or signed-out tiers. The twelve that do not include every business or enterprise tier the vendors sell except Mistral Vibe Teams, where Mistral does not state the default. That split, consumer trains and business does not, is the single pattern in the data, and the exceptions to it are where the detail matters.
This is a reference table, not an argument. Each row quotes the vendor's own wording for the default, names the setting and its menu path as the vendor documents it, and records the policy page and its date. Where a vendor describes training and an opt-out without saying which way the switch starts, the row is marked unclear, and it stays unclear until the vendor says otherwise.
The scope is chat products that a person or a team signs up for. Developer APIs and agent platforms, where the defaults and the retention rules are different, are covered in our API and agent-platform retention census. For how to use customer questions in AI-assisted work without exposing them, see our note on customer questions and AI content.
- 01Consumer tiers train by default; business tiers do not.ChatGPT Free and paid, Gemini on a personal account, Perplexity Free and paid, Mistral Vibe individual, Meta AI, the older Copilot app and signed-out Grok all describe training as on unless switched off, or offer no documented switch. Every business, Team, Enterprise or Workspace tier states the opposite, except Mistral Vibe Teams, where the default is not stated.
- 02Two vendors are the exceptions worth knowing.Anthropic makes new Claude users choose at signup and does not publish which position is pre-selected. Microsoft's new Copilot app, shipped August 18, 2026, says prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models and has no training toggle, while the older app's FAQ still describes opt-out training.
- 03A thumbs-up can override your opt-out.OpenAI says a conversation you rate may be used to improve models even if you have opted out. Anthropic, xAI, Mistral and Google each state a version of the same rule. The feedback buttons are a separate consent.
- 04Opt-outs apply going forward.Perplexity states that previously collected training data cannot be deleted or removed. Anthropic says data already in training runs or trained models stays there. Switching the setting stops future use; it does not unwind past use.
- 05Temporary chat is not zero retention.ChatGPT may keep a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety; Claude keeps incognito chats 30 days; Gemini keeps temporary chats 72 hours; Grok deletes Private Chat within 30 days. Only Perplexity says incognito searches are never stored.
01 — The PatternOne pattern, and its exceptions.
Read down the default column and the business tiers are monotonous: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, Claude Team and Enterprise, Gemini in Workspace, Copilot for work, Grok Business, Perplexity Enterprise, Mistral Vibe Enterprise. Each vendor states no training by default, in words close enough to each other that the market has clearly converged. OpenAI's phrasing is typical: "By default, we don't use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, or our API to improve our models."
The consumer tiers are nearly as uniform in the other direction. OpenAI says that for its services for individuals "we may use your content to train our models". Google says that for adults "Keep Activity is on by default" and that activity is used for "training generative AI models". Perplexity says its AI Data Retention setting "is enabled by default" for Free, Pro and Max. Mistral says input and output "are used by default to train" its models. Meta says it "uses your interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta" and documents no training opt-out on the pages we read.
The exceptions are the useful part. Anthropic requires a choice rather than setting a default, and does not publish which option is pre-selected. Microsoft's new Copilot app, released August 18, 2026, states that prompts and responses "aren't used to train foundation models" and its privacy-controls page carries no training toggle, while the FAQ for the older app, still live and marked as applying only to that version, describes training unless the user opts out. And four plans, Grok consumer, Grok on X, Mistral Vibe Teams and DeepSeek, describe both training and an opt-out without stating the starting position.
All consumer or signed-out tiers
ChatGPT Free and paid, Gemini personal (free and paid), the older Copilot app, Meta AI, signed-out Grok, Perplexity Free and paid, Mistral Vibe individual. Each quotes the vendor's own wording.
Nine business-tier rows, plus three consumer rows
The business, Team, Enterprise or Workspace tiers of the seven vendors that sell one (Mistral Vibe Teams excepted: default not stated), plus the new Copilot app, Copilot when not signed in, under 18 or in an excluded country, and Copilot inside Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.
Claude Free, Pro and Max
Anthropic: new users pick during signup. The pre-selected position is not published, so these rows are neither yes nor no.
Grok (three rows), Mistral Teams, DeepSeek
The vendor describes training and an opt-out but never says which way the switch starts. These rows stay unclear until the vendor's page says.
02 — The TableDefaults and switches, plan by plan.
The default column uses four values. Yes means the vendor states that training is on or that content is used by default. No means the vendor states no training by default. User choice means the vendor requires an explicit choice and does not publish a pre-selected position. Unclear means the vendor describes training and an opt-out but does not state the default. The quoted text in the evidence column is what each value rests on. Retention and temporary-chat behaviour are in the next section's table, one row per app, to keep this one readable.

| DeepSeek | |||
| Consumer (free chat app and web) | unclear | The Terms say "you can opt out by turning off 'Improve the model for everyone'", which implies on; no explicit default stated | Improve the model for everyone (menu path not published on the policy pages) |
Two reading notes. The ChatGPT rows cover the consumer product; OpenAI's sentence groups "ChatGPT and Codex" together as services for individuals, so the same default applies to Codex on a personal plan. The Gemini paid-plan row inherits the personal-account rule because Google's privacy hub mentions collecting subscription information but states no separate training rule for paid plans; we neither confirmed nor ruled out an exception.
03 — RetentionHow long chats are kept, and the pages behind each row.
Training and retention are separate questions, and vendors answer them on different pages. This table collapses each app to one row: the retention statements that apply to its consumer and business tiers, how temporary or incognito chats are handled, and the policy pages with their dates. Where a vendor publishes no period, the row says so.
| App | Retention, as stated | Temporary or incognito chat | Policy pages (date) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Deleted data removed "within 30 days". Business and Enterprise: "Your workspace admins can control how long your data is retained"; deleted or unsaved conversations removed within 30 days | Temporary chat "is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary"; OpenAI "may keep a copy… for up to 30 days for safety purposes" | Help centre article on data use (updated about September 28, 2026); Temporary chat FAQ (about September 19, 2026); privacy policy (February 6, 2026); enterprise privacy page (January 8, 2026) |
| Claude | Opted in: de-identified data "for up to 5 years" in training pipelines. Not opted in: the "existing 30-day data retention period". Deleted chats removed within 30 days. Team and Enterprise: organisation retention policies; custom retention on Enterprise | Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even with the setting on; retained 30 days by default, or longer under an Enterprise custom retention setting | Anthropic privacy centre articles (March 16, July 1, August 3 and August 18, 2026); consumer-terms update post (August 28, 2025); support article on incognito (undated) |
| Gemini | Auto-delete default "18 months" (options 3 or 36 months, or never). Human-reviewed chats "are not deleted when you delete your activity" and are kept "up to three years". Workspace: up to 36 months as admins set | Temporary chats "are not used to train Google's AI models"; kept 72 hours, as are chats made with Keep Activity off | Gemini Apps privacy hub (privacy questions September 24, 2026; notice June 29, 2026); Keep Activity help page (undated); Workspace admin help (October 6, 2026) |
| Microsoft Copilot | New app: history kept until deleted, no period stated. Older app: "By default, we store conversation activity for 18 months." Work: prompts and responses logged and auditable by admins | None documented on the pages read | Microsoft support pages on activity history, privacy controls, the older-app privacy FAQ and work data protection (no dates shown); enterprise data protection documentation (August 18, 2026) |
| Meta AI | No retention period stated on the pages read; a deletion path documented for the Meta AI app, and see-or-download commands for WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram | None documented on the pages read | Meta AI help article (updated about early July 2026); Meta privacy policy (effective July 23, 2026); AI terms (effective May 13, 2026) |
| Grok | Deleted conversations removed "within 30 days" unless de-identified or kept for safety or legal reasons. Business: inputs and outputs deleted within 30 days unless agreed | Private Chat, "where available": "not used for model training"; "deleted from SpaceXAI systems within 30 days" | xAI consumer FAQ (undated); privacy policy (effective August 24, 2026); enterprise FAQ (February 25, 2025); X help page on Grok (undated) |
| Perplexity | Kept "only as long as necessary"; opt-outs "only apply to data collected after the opt-out date". Enterprise: uploaded files "retained for only 7 days"; custom retention for larger organisations | Incognito: "Searches in incognito mode are never stored"; signed-out threads anonymous by default | Help centre data-collection article (September 3, 2026); account settings article (September 24, 2026); privacy notice (July 8, 2026) |
| Mistral Vibe | "We keep your Input and Output until you delete your account or until you delete the conversation"; account data one year after deletion | Not documented in the help centre; a vendor news page mentions an incognito chat that does not use memory and says nothing about training | Help centre articles (August 31 and September 3, 2026); privacy policy (effective September 3, 2026) |
| DeepSeek | "We keep this Personal Data for as long as you have an account"; chat history deletable in settings | None documented on the pages read | Privacy policy (February 10, 2026); terms of use (March 27, 2026) |
04 — Feedback ButtonsThe thumbs-up that overrides your setting.
Five of the nine vendors state that rating a response is a separate consent from the training setting. OpenAI is explicit: "If you proactively choose to submit feedback, such as by selecting thumbs up or thumbs down on a response, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve our models, even if you've opted out." Note the scope: the entire conversation, not the rated message.
xAI's FAQ says that "even if you opt out of model training, when you subsequently decide to voluntarily provide feedback, that feedback may be used for training purposes". Anthropic's privacy centre says a rated conversation is stored for up to five years and may be used to "train our AI models"; Mistral applies the feedback rule to every subscription plan; Google says chats made with Keep Activity off "won't be used to train our AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback", and keeps human-reviewed chats, with related feedback, for up to three years. On Claude Team and Enterprise, an owner can switch the rating buttons off for the whole organisation, which is the one place in the data where the override itself has a switch.
The example that catches teams: a staff member opts out, then rates a few answers while working through a document that contains customer details. Under OpenAI's wording the whole conversation is now eligible. The fix is a policy sentence, not a setting: do not rate responses in conversations that contain anything you would not paste into a public form.
05 — DirectionOpt-outs only go forward.
None of the nine vendors' pages we read offers to remove a conversation from a model it has already trained, and two say so directly. Perplexity's help centre: "Previously collected training data cannot be deleted or removed." Anthropic's privacy centre says data already used stays "in model training runs that are already in progress, or in models that have been trained". The same Perplexity help page adds that opt-outs "only apply to data collected after the opt-out date".
That is not a criticism of the vendors; it is how training works. It does change the order of operations for anyone setting up an account. The switch is set before the first sensitive conversation, not after a review notices the default. For a team that has been on a consumer plan for months, the realistic step is to change the setting now, delete history where the vendor allows it, and accept that past conversations are past.
06 — Ephemeral ModesTemporary is not zero.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok each say their temporary, incognito or private mode is not used for training (xAI adds "where available"). All four also publish a retention period for those chats, and it is not zero. The list below is the vendors' own figures. Perplexity is the outlier in the other direction, stating that incognito searches are never stored.
- ChatGPT Temporary chatOpenAI help centre, about September 19, 2026
- up to 30 daysfor safety purposes
- Claude incognito chatAnthropic support, Enterprise can set longer
- 30 daysdefault
- Gemini temporary chatGoogle privacy hub, September 24, 2026
- 72 hourssame for Keep Activity off
- Grok Private ChatxAI consumer FAQ
- within 30 daysdeleted from SpaceXAI systems
- Perplexity incognitoPerplexity help centre, September 24, 2026
- never storedvendor's wording
The failure case is treating an ephemeral mode as a substitute for the account setting. A temporary chat is a per-conversation choice that the user has to remember to make, and in ChatGPT's case, saving it afterwards applies the account's training setting to it. The account setting, or the plan, is the control that holds.
07 — Plan ChoiceChoosing a plan for work.
For a business, the table reduces to one decision. Every vendor that sells a business tier states no training by default on it (on Mistral Vibe, for Enterprise; the Teams default is not stated), and most add admin-set retention. Meta AI and DeepSeek have no business chat plan on the pages we read, which is itself an answer for work use. The router below is our reading of the vendors' statements; it is not legal advice, and a regulated business should check the contract terms, not the help centre.
One more distinction the pages make. Not training on your data is not the same as not retaining it, and not retaining it is not the same as not reviewing it. Google's Workspace page states no training without permission and, separately, retention of up to 36 months as admins set it. Microsoft's work page states no foundation-model training and, separately, that prompts and responses are logged and auditable by admins. A vendor-risk review should check all three, which is the structure of our AI vendor risk assessment template.
08 — MethodHow the rows were collected, and what could not be verified.
A table like this is only as good as its gaps are honest. Nine items could not be settled from the vendors' pages, and each is recorded here rather than resolved by guesswork.
- What was collected
- For each of nine chat apps (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Grok, Perplexity, Mistral Vibe, DeepSeek) and each plan the vendor distinguishes on its policy pages: whether conversations are used for model training by default, the setting name and menu path, the retention statements, the handling of temporary or incognito chats, and the policy page with its date. 29 plan rows.
- Sources
- Vendor privacy policies, terms, legal pages and help or privacy centres only. Two vendor-run news pages (Anthropic's August 28, 2025 consumer-terms update; a Mistral news page mentioning incognito) are used and marked as such. No news sites or aggregators were used as sources; a search was used only to locate vendor URLs.
- As-of date
- All pages were read on October 9, 2026. The post carries its October 5, 2026 slot date; the collection date is this one, and it is not restated elsewhere on the page. Relative dates on help-centre pages were converted from October 9 and are approximate.
- Default values
- "Yes" and "no" are used only where the vendor states the default. "User choice" is used where the vendor requires an explicit choice and publishes no pre-selected position (Claude consumer). "Unclear" is used where the vendor describes training and an opt-out without stating the default; no unclear row was upgraded by inference.
- Could not be verified
- (1) Claude's consumer pre-selected position. (2) Grok's consumer default on grok.com, in the app and on X; SuperGrok is not distinguished from Free; the consumer FAQ carries no date; the enterprise FAQ (February 25, 2025) does not name the Grok Business chat app. (3) DeepSeek's default and the menu path to its toggle. (4) The older Copilot app's toggle label: the linked privacy-controls page returned 404 on October 9. (5) Any Meta AI training opt-out, retention period or temporary mode; the Meta generative-AI privacy page's sections did not render to any fetch method. (6) Mistral Vibe Free versus Pro, the Teams default, and incognito behaviour. (7) A separate rule for Gemini paid personal plans. (8) Dates for several help pages, listed in the retention table as undated. (9) Perplexity's exact toggle label, which its own page gives two ways.
- What is excluded
- Developer APIs and agent platforms (see the linked census). Regional variants such as EU and UK objection rights under Meta's AI terms. Enterprise contract terms that override the public pages.
- Refresh
- Maintained by the Digital Applied Team; reviewed quarterly and out of cycle when a vendor changes a default or ships a new app version, as Microsoft did on August 18, 2026. Rows are updated in place and the page is re-dated through its modified time; the URL stays stable.
If your team needs these controls set and documented across the apps it actually uses, with the vendor pages recorded as evidence, that is part of what our AI transformation engagements cover.
09 — ConclusionConsumer plans train; business plans do not.
Pick the plan whose default is no, set the switch before the first real conversation, and treat the rating buttons as a second consent.
Across 29 plan rows and nine apps, the vendors have converged on one arrangement: consumer tiers use conversations for training unless the user turns it off, and business tiers do not unless the customer turns it on. Anthropic's required choice and Microsoft's new consumer app, which rules out foundation-model training, are the exceptions, and five rows leave the default unstated.
Three details sit underneath the pattern and are where teams get caught. Rating a response can override an opt-out for the whole conversation. An opt-out stops future use and does not unwind past training. And temporary modes are kept for days or weeks, not zero, at every vendor that publishes a period; only Perplexity says its incognito searches are never stored.
Everything in the tables is quoted from a vendor page listed in the retention table, with its date where the page shows one, read on the as-of date above. Where a vendor did not say, the row says unclear. When a vendor changes a default, the row changes here, at this URL.
