Shopify Spring ’26 Edition: Agentic Commerce Arrives

Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition shipped today — 150+ updates headlined by agentic commerce infrastructure. The Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google and backed by Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Stripe, is now open to every developer with no approval required. Shopify Catalog makes millions of merchants discoverable across ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Mode by default. This is our corrected, Shopify-sourced read of what actually shipped.

Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition launched on June 17, 2026 with 150+ updates, and the headline is unambiguous: agentic commerce is now production infrastructure on Shopify, not a roadmap promise. The edition tagline — “150+ updates to sell, shop, and build everywhere” — frames the shift, but the substance is a small set of building blocks that make every eligible merchant discoverable by AI agents by default.

A note on why this guide exists. Our earlier write-up of this edition leaned on aggregator coverage and shipped with feature names and an edition label that Shopify never used. This is the corrected version, sourced only from Shopify’s own channels — shopify.com, shopify.dev, and the Shopify Help Center. When a platform moves this fast, secondhand summaries drift quickly; the primary sources are the only safe ground.

This guide covers what actually shipped: the Universal Commerce Protocol as an open standard, Shopify Catalog and the Global Catalog MCP that has replaced the deprecated Catalog REST API, the expanded Agentic Storefronts management hub, the readiness status of each feature (general availability versus developer preview), and the metrics Shopify reports — every one of which we attribute to Shopify because none has been independently audited.

Key takeaways
  1. 01
The edition is the Spring '26 Edition, launched June 17.One edition, 150+ updates, one launch date. It builds on the agentic commerce platform Shopify and Google first announced on January 11, 2026, and on Agentic Storefronts, which debuted in the Winter '26 Edition on December 10, 2025.
  2. 02
UCP is an open standard, not a Shopify lock-in.The Universal Commerce Protocol was co-developed with Google, is backed by Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target and Wayfair, and is open to every developer with no approval committee — a public spec, an API key, and a product idea.
  3. 03
Shopify Catalog makes merchants discoverable by default.Eligible Shopify merchant products are enabled with no setup and auto-syndicated to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and the Shop app. Shopify reports AI searches powered by Catalog convert at 2x the rate of scraped data.
  4. 04
The Global Catalog MCP is the canonical interface now.The Catalog REST API is deprecated in favour of the Global Catalog MCP, whose search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product tools support image search, multi-modal queries and bulk lookup of up to 50 products per request.
  5. 05
Read the readiness status before you build. Most of the stack is GA, but Promoted Placements is a developer preview, and while Sign in with Shop is available, personalization via buyer-linked tokens is listed as coming soon in the developer docs. Status matters more than the headline.

01What ShippedOne edition, 150+ updates, launched today.

The Spring ’26 Edition is a single release — not a series of staggered drops or a separate showcase. June 17, 2026 is the launch date, and the official count is 150+ updates spanning selling, shopping and building. The agentic commerce work is the centre of gravity, and it rests on a coherent set of pieces rather than a scatter of standalone features.

Two pieces of context keep the story accurate. First, the underlying agentic commerce platform — the Universal Commerce Protocol and the Catalog — was first announced with Google on January 11, 2026; the Spring ’26 Edition confirms it as generally available for Shopify merchants and expands the developer tooling around it. Second, Agentic Storefronts is not brand new: it debuted in the Winter ’26 Edition on December 10, 2025 and is expanded here with more channels and a richer Admin hub. If you want that earlier groundwork, see our recap of what Shopify shipped in the Winter ’26 Edition.

The Spring ’26 Edition launched June 17, 2026 with 150+ updates. It builds on the agentic commerce platform Shopify and Google announced on January 11, 2026 and on Agentic Storefronts from the Winter ’26 Edition (December 10, 2025). There is no separate “June drop” or showcase — one edition, one launch date. Always confirm a feature’s readiness on the official editions hub before relying on it in production.

02The Open StandardUCP is an open standard, not a walled garden.

The most misread part of this release is ownership. The Universal Commerce Protocol is not a Shopify proprietary lock-in. It is an open standard, co-developed with Google, that covers the full commerce journey from discovery through checkout. Its public specification is openly accessible and any developer can build against it — no approval committee, no registration gate. As Shopify’s own framing puts it, the threshold for building commerce has dropped to an API key, structured data, and an idea.

The backing matters because an open standard only works when the ecosystem adopts it. Per Shopify, UCP is supported by Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target, Wayfair and millions of Shopify merchants, with the broader endorser roster from the January 11, 2026 reveal adding American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy’s, The Home Depot, Zalando and others. That is a rising-tide bet, not a moat play.

The shift to agentic commerce will require a shared language across the ecosystem — and the Universal Commerce Protocol provides that framework.— Ashish Gupta, VP/GM of Merchant Shopping, Google

Architecturally, UCP is layered. Universal Primitives handle dynamic negotiation and versioning so clients and servers can agree on what they support. Standardized Operations cover the common path — product discovery, checkout, orders, and post-purchase. Custom Extensions let merchants add domain logic like discounts, fulfillment rules and embedded checkout, using reverse-domain naming with no central registry to bottleneck innovation. Transports span REST, GraphQL, JSON-RPC, A2A (Agent2Agent) and MCP, which is what lets one protocol power conversational purchasing, embedded checkouts and web-based flows alike.

The practical read for marketers and engineers: UCP is the standardization moment agentic commerce needed. Before a shared protocol, every agent had to scrape and guess at each merchant’s data and checkout. A common language is what turns “an agent can sometimes buy from some stores” into “agents can reliably transact across the ecosystem.” Standards are unglamorous, but they are usually the thing that makes a capability go from demo to default. For the broader picture, see our deep-dive guide to Shopify’s agentic commerce and UCP.

03Catalog + MCPShopify Catalog and the canonical Global Catalog MCP.

If UCP is the language, Shopify Catalog is the dictionary. It is the structured product data layer — billions of products from millions of Shopify merchants, standardized by specialized LLMs for categorization, enrichment and taxonomy. The richer attributes include size, color, delivery estimates, media, variants, availability and multi-seller offers. Crucially, eligible Shopify merchant products are enabled by default with no setup, and Catalog auto-syndicates them to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and the Shop app — no manual integration required.

One important recency signal: the interface has moved. The Catalog REST API is now deprecated in favour of the Global Catalog MCP, and new implementations should use the MCP. Any guide still pointing developers at the REST endpoint is behind. The Global Catalog MCP exposes three core tools, and the full agentic stack continues into Cart, Checkout and Order MCPs that cover the rest of the buyer journey.

Tool 01
search_catalog
text · image · multi-modal

Search across all Shopify merchants. Pass a text catalog.query, an image in catalog.like, or both in a single request. Filter by price range, availability, shipping location, condition, ratings and taxonomy attributes.

Global Catalog MCP
Tool 02
lookup_catalog
URLs / UPIDs → matches

Resolve a list of product URLs or UPIDs into Catalog matches with real-time pricing and availability — up to 50 products in a single request on the Global Catalog.

Bulk · 50 max
Tool 03
get_product
single-product detail

Retrieve full structured detail for one product. Together with search_catalog and lookup_catalog, it is the canonical path now that the Catalog REST API is deprecated.

Canonical interface
The credibility move on the 2x stat
Shopify reports that AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at 2x the rate of those using scraped data. We cite it because the underlying logic is sound — structured, enriched data lets an agent reason better than it can over scraped page text — but it is a Shopify-stated figure with no independent audit confirmed. Treat it as a directional signal, not a guaranteed benchmark.

Note one carefully-hedged feature. Sign in with Shop integration is available, letting merchants add Shop sign-in to Catalog-built experiences. But Shopify reports the integration is available while the developer docs list personalization via buyer-linked tokens as coming soon — so personalized results tied to a shopper’s Shop account are not yet uniformly GA. Build the sign-in path now; plan the personalization layer for when the buyer-linked tokens ship.

04ReadinessWhat is GA versus what is still preview.

Most coverage treats everything in the edition as “shipped.” It is not. The table below maps each major agentic feature to its actual readiness status as Shopify labels it — general availability, developer preview, or a coming-soon caveat. Every status traces to a Shopify source. This is the distinction that decides what you can rely on in production this quarter versus what you should pilot.

Read the status column, not the headline
The single most useful habit when a platform ships 150+ updates is to separate available from announced. UCP, Catalog, the Global Catalog MCP and Agentic Storefronts are GA and safe to build on now. Promoted Placements is a developer preview, and buyer-linked personalization is coming soon — pilot those, don’t promise them.

05Agentic StorefrontsA control room for your AI channels.

Discoverability without measurement is a leap of faith. Agentic Storefronts in the Shopify Admin is the centralized management hub that closes that gap — and remember, it debuted in the Winter ’26 Edition and is expanded here, not introduced fresh. It gives merchants channel-management toggles to control which AI platforms sell their products, performance analytics for search and sales, conversion diagnostics, and order attribution showing which AI channel drove each sale. It also surfaces “search intelligence” — the trends and topics customers are asking about across AI channels.

Eligibility is where the practical detail lives, and it differs by channel. The AI channels covered include ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app and Shop. For a playbook on earning visibility inside these surfaces, see how to get your products visible in AI chats via Agentic Storefronts and our SEO strategy for agentic storefronts across ChatGPT, Google AI, and Copilot.

06The NumbersWhat Shopify reports — and how to read it.

Shopify shared several growth figures with the edition. We present them exactly as what they are — Shopify-reported and not independently audited — because honest attribution is more credible than uncritical repetition. The direction of travel is what matters: AI-driven shopping is real and accelerating, and the magnitudes below are the platform’s own account of how fast.

Shopify-reported agentic commerce growth

Catalog conversion liftAI searches via Catalog vs scraped data · Shopify reports
2x

The bars above are scaled to the 15x figure so the relative magnitudes are visible at a glance; each value is the multiple Shopify states, not an audited measurement. Two merchant case studies put faces on the numbers, again as Shopify reports them: Omnilux, a red-light-therapy brand, attributes 3.2% of total revenue to AI channels in March 2026, and Cozy Earth, a luxury bedding brand, says overall revenue from AI channels was up 20x year over year.

Our reading, projecting forward: the meaningful number here is not any single multiple but the consistency of the direction across traffic, orders, and individual merchants. If even a fraction of this holds as it scales, AI channels move from a curiosity to a standard distribution surface within a year or two — which is precisely why structured Catalog data and Agentic Storefronts attribution stop being optional. The merchants who instrument now will know which AI channels pay off before the ones who wait.

07For DevelopersAn API key, structured data, and an idea.

The developer story is the quiet revolution in this edition. Shopify shipped a GA AI Toolkit — a plugin for Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and VS Code (and additional editors) that auto-fills data structures, catches errors during development, and bundles skills and the Shopify CLI for token-efficient implementation. Alongside it, the open-source toolkit includes a UCP Skill packaging what Shopify frames as 20 years of commerce knowledge for agent use, complemented by a UCP CLI for structured commands.

Shopify also published five demo applications to show what Catalog plus UCP make possible — Showroom (visual product discovery from video), All Set (destination-based packing lists), Starred (a horoscope app with shoppable recommendations), Sourced (image-to-products matching), and Pippin (a voice-activated board game recommender). They are deliberately playful, and that is the point: each was built without a dedicated commerce backend.

This would have meant dedicated engineering teams, custom backends... Now it's just an API key, structured data, and an idea.— Shopify, Spring '26 Edition design team
One caveat on Promoted Placements
Shopify notes a future revenue-sharing path for developers building Catalog-powered experiences via Promoted Placements, with a typical affiliate commission referenced in the catalog docs. It is a developer preview, not generally available — build for it, but do not model revenue on it yet.

08Your MoveWhat merchants and teams should do now.

The edition rewards action that matches feature readiness. Here is how we’d sequence it by situation — lead with what is GA, pilot what is in preview, and instrument everything so the reported numbers become your numbers.

Build on the Global Catalog MCP

Make agentic SEO a line item

Discoverability is now a channel with its own analytics. Treat agentic storefront visibility like organic search a decade ago — early, measurable, and compounding. Map demand from search intelligence into merchandising and content, and assign ownership.

Own the channel

For most teams the fastest credible win is the boring one: make sure your Catalog data is clean and complete, confirm your AI channels are switched on in Agentic Storefronts, and set up attribution so you can tell which conversations convert. That is where the reported 2x lift becomes legible in your own dashboard rather than a vendor slide. If you want help wiring up the data layer and measurement, our ecommerce services and agentic SEO engagements start with exactly this. For a structured method, see our guide to optimizing your catalog data for AI agent discovery and the complete guide to agentic commerce SEO.

09ConclusionThe edition that made agentic commerce the default.

The shape of commerce, June 2026

Agentic commerce stopped being a roadmap and became infrastructure.

The Spring ’26 Edition’s real achievement is not the count of updates — it is that the agentic pieces now fit together. An open standard in UCP, a structured data layer in Catalog enabled by default, a canonical MCP interface, and a measurement hub in Agentic Storefronts. Each was announced separately over the prior two editions; here they cohere into something a merchant or developer can actually act on today.

We have been deliberate about attribution throughout. Every growth figure — the 2x Catalog conversion, the 8x traffic and 15x orders, the 4x Sidekick shops, Omnilux at 3.2% and Cozy Earth at 20x — is Shopify-reported and not independently audited, and we have flagged where readiness is still preview rather than GA. That discipline is not pedantry; it is what separates a guide you can build a roadmap on from one that gets taken down.

The broader signal is clear: discovery no longer needs a destination. When agents can search, compare and check out across an open protocol, the merchants who win are the ones whose data is clean, whose channels are switched on, and whose attribution tells them what is working. The edition makes that table-stakes by default. The work now is to instrument it, read the numbers honestly, and move before the channel stops being early.

The questions we get every week.

The Spring '26 Edition is Shopify's product release that launched on June 17, 2026 with 150+ updates, under the tagline '150+ updates to sell, shop, and build everywhere.' It is a single edition with one launch date — not a series of separate drops or a standalone showcase. The headline theme is agentic commerce: making every eligible merchant discoverable by AI agents by default. It builds on the agentic commerce platform Shopify and Google first announced on January 11, 2026, and on Agentic Storefronts, which debuted in the Winter '26 Edition on December 10, 2025.
